Seven signs your brand needs a refresh
A brand is not a one-time project. Businesses grow, audiences change and what looked modern a few years ago can start to look tired. The tricky part is that you see your brand every day, so you are the last person to notice it has aged.
Here are seven signs that it may be time to look at it again.
1. You feel uncomfortable sharing your materials
If you hesitate before handing out a business card or sending someone to your website, pay attention. That small discomfort usually means your image no longer matches the quality of your work.
2. Your business changed, but your brand did not
New services, new clients, a new market. When the business evolves and the brand stays where it was, people get an outdated idea of what you do.
3. Every channel looks different
A logo here, another colour there, a different tone on each platform. If your brand looks like several companies, it is not helping anyone remember you.
4. It looks like everyone else in your industry
If you covered your logo, could a customer tell your materials apart from your competitors’? Blending in is comfortable, but it makes it harder to be chosen.
5. It does not work on small screens
Many logos were designed for signs or printed paper. If yours becomes unreadable as a small social media profile picture, it is working against you.
6. You want to reach a different audience
Moving up market, speaking to a new generation or entering another country usually calls for a brand that speaks their language.
7. Your team improvises
If every person who creates a flyer or a post makes their own decisions about colours and fonts, the brand is missing clear rules.
A refresh is not always a reinvention
Updating a brand does not have to mean throwing everything away. Sometimes it is a cleaner version of the logo, a tighter colour palette, a clearer tone or a guide that keeps everything consistent. Sometimes it is a deeper change. The right answer depends on how much of your current brand still represents who you are.
