How to tell whether your marketing investment is working

Many business owners invest in marketing every month and still are not sure whether it is working. Reports full of numbers do not always help. The good news is that you do not need to read every chart. You need to ask the right questions.

Here are six questions you can bring to your next meeting with your team or your agency.

1. What was the goal, in one sentence?

Every effort should start with a clear goal: more inquiries, more bookings, more visits to a location, a better-known brand. If nobody can say the goal in one sentence, it is hard to say whether it was reached.

2. Which number tells us if we are getting closer?

For each goal there is usually one number that matters most. If the goal is inquiries, it is the number of inquiries, not the number of likes. Agree on that number before the work begins.

3. Compared with what?

A number on its own says little. Is it better or worse than last month, the same season last year, or the period before the campaign? A fair comparison tells you more than a big figure.

4. Where do our customers say they found us?

Ask new customers how they heard about you. It is simple, it costs nothing, and it often reveals channels that reports do not show clearly.

5. What are we learning?

Good marketing teaches you something every month: which message works, which audience responds, which day performs better. If the answer is always «everything is fine», ask for more detail.

6. What will we change next month?

A report that does not lead to a decision is just a document. Every review should end with something to keep, something to stop and something to try.

Patience and judgment

Some efforts, like building a brand or ranking in search engines, take months to show results. Others, like a campaign with a clear offer, show signs sooner. Knowing which is which helps you avoid stopping something too early or keeping something that is not working.
